Allowing illegal immigrants to be eligible for Social Security benefits — as Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), a candidate for the presidential 2020 election, has suggested — is a “ridiculous proposal,” former Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas (R) said Wednesday night on the Fox News program “Hannity.”

“Let’s not only give them Grandma’s Social Security, let’s toss in a car and maybe rent for a nice home,” Huckabee said to host Sean Hannity, referring to the Democrat’s plan.

“I’m just amazed that people are applauding this kind of stuff,” he added, as Fox News reported.

“I hope Kirsten Gillibrand has to go out and talk to people in their 70s who can barely afford food and tell them they’re going to not get their Social Security raised because we’re going to be giving it to people who broke into this country illegally,” said Huckabee. “I can’t wait to see whether she gets applause in a room filled with retirees living off of Social Security when she makes that ridiculous proposal.”

At a campaign event earlier in the week, Gillibrand defended migrants who are currently living in the U.S. illegally and called for “comprehensive immigration reform.”

“If you are in this country now, you must have the right to pay into Social Security, to pay your taxes, to pay into your local school system, and to have a pathway to citizenship. That must happen,” Gillibrand said.

In addition to Huckabee, nationally syndicated radio host Larry Elder also criticized the Gillibrand plan on Wednesday night.

Democrats who are making proposals like these are “in pursuit of the Hispanic vote,” Elder told Hannity.

But he noted that recent poll data averaging shows that President Donald Trump has support from roughly 30 percent of Hispanic voters. That’s approximately the same backing that previous GOP presidential nominees Mitt Romney and John McCain received.

Gillibrand, 52, is one of six senators who have declared they’re running for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020. The others are Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.).

In all, 15 Democrats now have declared their candidacies.

Others — including former vice president Joe Biden — are expected to jump in as well.

Gillibrand also said this week she believes she is the “best person” to take on President Trump in 2020.

“I have a record of standing up and being brave when it’s really hard,” she said during an event in Iowa this week. “I have a record of doing the brave thing when it’s hard, when it’s not convenient, when it’s things others won’t do. That’s what makes me different. I’m just a very different kind of person with a very different record than any other Democrat running.”

In 2009 she was appointed to be one of New York’s two U.S. senators after Hillary Clinton left the seat to serve as secretary of state under Barack Obama.

“I’m just a very different kind of person with a very different record than any other Democrat running.”

Sen. Chuck Schumer is the other New York senator; he’s been in office since 1999.

In a March Des Moines Register/CNN/Mediacom Iowa Poll, Gillibrand did not register with any poll respondents as their number-one choice for president, as The Hawk Eye pointed out.
