President Biden called for banning ‘assault weapons’ and ‘high-capacity magazines’ in a major announcement on gun control, insisting that “no amendment to the constitution is absolute.”

Biden began by announcing a series of executive actions he’d be taking to curb gun violence in America, something he described as a “public health crisis” and an “international embarrassment.”

The President’s actions call for restrictions on so-called “ghost guns” – handmade firearms without serial numbers – as well as directing the DOJ to publish suggestions for “red flag” legislation for states.

So-called “red flag” laws allow authorities to confiscate firearms from individuals deemed a risk to themselves or others, without having been convicted of a crime.

He also calls for a comprehensive report on firearms trafficking and investment in intervention programs in violence-prone communities.

Biden Calls For Further Gun Control

While not part of his specific executive actions, President Biden went on to push for further gun control action in Congress, including bans on ‘assault weapons’ and ‘high-capacity’ magazines.

“We should also ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines in this country,” Biden said, adding “there’s no reason” a person could possibly need a weapon that can hold “one hundred rounds.”

Biden also formally announced the nomination of David Chipman as director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), though he struggled to remember the three letters in question.

Chipman is an gun control partisan who has argued for a “well regulated” Second Amendment.

His vision is in line with Biden’s statements, having published an op-ed arguing for the necessity to limit “high-capacity” magazines saying anything approaching 100-round magazines is “not normal.”

Biden Says Second Amendment Not Absolute

President Biden insisted that his calls for further gun control in America and the actions being taken would not violate anybody’s Second Amendment rights.

Still, he argues against the absolute right of any amendment in the Constitution.

“No amendment to the constitution is absolute,” the President said.

“From the very beginning you couldn’t own any weapon you wanted to own, and from the very beginning of the Second Amendment existed certain people weren’t allowed to have weapons,” he suggested.

“So the idea is just bizarre to suggest that some of the things we’re recommending are contrary to the Constitution.”

Strikingly, Biden adds that his top priority will be revoking immunity for gun-makers from being sued over shooting incidents.

“We should also eliminate gun manufacturers from the immunity they receive from the Congress,” he said.

Biden wished, “If I get one thing on my list, Lord came down and said, ‘Joe, you get one of these,’ give me that one.”

“I want to tell you, if I’m elected, NRA I’m coming for you and gun manufacturers I’m going to take you on and I’m going to beat you,” Biden said as a candidate.

The NRA issued a statement regarding President Biden’s announcement.

“Biden has made clear his sights are set on restricting the rights of law-abiding gun owners while ignoring criminals and foregoing substantive measures that will actually keep Americans safe,” they said.

“Further, the proposals Biden announced tonight could require law-abiding citizens to surrender lawful property and enable states to expand gun confiscation orders.”

The President made it clear that he intended to enact gun control when he campaigned for the White House. He’s simply following through on those promises.
