During the memorial service for Ethel Kennedy on Wednesday, Joe Biden and Barack Obama were seen engaged in what appeared to be a serious discussion.

The service took place at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington, D.C., and brought together prominent political figures to honor the widow of Robert F. Kennedy, who passed away at the age of 96 due to complications from a stroke.

As attendees gathered to pay their respects, attention quickly shifted from honoring Ethel Kennedy to the interaction between Biden and Obama.

Speculation arose regarding the nature of their conversation, especially with the 2024 presidential election just weeks away.

The funeral drew notable political leaders, including Bill Clinton, who delivered a heartfelt speech in memory of Ethel.

To shed light on the exchange between the two former presidents, The New York Post enlisted professional lip-reader Jeremy Freeman to analyze video footage of their interaction.

Freeman’s findings indicated that the discussion turned to Vice President Kamala Harris and her perceived strengths leading into the upcoming election.

Biden reportedly remarked, “She’s not as strong as me,” referring to Harris, to which Obama responded, “I know… that’s true.”

The conversation continued, with Obama providing reassurance, stating, “We have time.” Biden then added, “Yeah, we’ll get it in time.” While Freeman did not explicitly name Harris in his transcription, the context of the discussion suggests she was indeed the focus.

Freeman described the exchange as “very supportive,” noting a lack of tension between Biden and Obama, despite Obama shaking his head at one point.

These remarks indicate a critical assessment of Harris’s candidacy by two influential figures in the Democratic Party.

Following Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race in July, he was pressured by fellow Democrats to step aside in favor of Harris, who now leads the Democratic ticket.

The conversation has fueled speculation about internal party dynamics, especially given earlier reports of growing friction between Harris’s team and Biden’s former aides.

“From the outset, there has been widespread concern that Harris was not a strong alternative to Biden, who clearly was a sinking ship. So much so that multiple House members floated the idea of an open convention or removing Harris from the ticket along with Biden,” a Democratic source told The Post.

The source added, “Democrats essentially robbed Peter to pay Paul and are now stuck with a less likable sinking ship.”

In the lead-up to his withdrawal, several sources close to Biden suggested that his resentment towards Obama motivated him to continue his campaign.

After Biden stepped down, Obama praised him, stating that his decision reflected his “love of country.”

Earlier this week, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi mentioned that she had not spoken with Biden in months, noting that some of his supporters still “haven’t forgiven” her for encouraging him to make that decision.

As the 2024 election approaches, the dynamics within the Democratic Party continue to evolve, with significant implications for the upcoming race.

The exchange between Biden and Obama at Ethel Kennedy’s memorial has highlighted the challenges facing Harris as she seeks to unify the party and rally support among voters.
