Republican figures took Halloween costumes to a political level this year, responding to Joe Biden’s recent remarks by dressing up as “garbage.”

Both Donald Trump Jr. and podcast host Megyn Kelly made waves on social media with costumes mocking Biden’s comment, in which he referred to Trump supporters as “garbage” in response to a joke made at a Trump rally.

Megyn Kelly posted her costume on social media, wearing black trash bags and a MAGA cap.

Reactions were mixed, with some users praising her creativity, saying, “Only you can make a garbage bag costume look good,” while others criticized her, calling the outfit a “true representation of daily life as a MAGA cultist.”

Trump Jr. also embraced the theme, sharing his costume on Instagram on Thursday. His outfit featured a black trash bag adorned with discarded paper and plastic bags, along with a red “Trump 2024” flag draped over his shoulders.

“Happy Halloween,” he wrote. “Embrace their hate and own it. I’m garbage like the rest of you deplorable and irredeemables!” He posed with family members, including his ex-wife Vanessa Trump and their daughter Kai, who has been vocal in her support for her grandfather.

These costumes were in response to remarks Biden made earlier this week, condemning comments at a rally led by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who joked about Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage” during a Trump event at Madison Square Garden.

In a call with Latino voters, Biden stated, “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters,” adding that Trump’s rhetoric about Latinos was “unconscionable” and “un-American.”

Donald Trump Jr. criticized the comment and said Biden’s rhetoric against Trump supporters was “absolutely disgusting.”

He also highlighted recent remarks by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who compared Trump supporters to Nazis, and Harris’s silence on those comments.

The former president also joined in the backlash. At a rally in Wisconsin, Trump arrived in a garbage truck, wearing an orange vest. “How do you like my garbage truck? This truck is in honor of Kamala and Joe Biden,” he said, calling Biden’s statement “a disgrace.”

Trump compared Biden’s comment to Hillary Clinton’s “basket of deplorables” remark, calling it “worse.”

At another rally in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Trump took aim at Biden’s mental state, saying, “Please forgive him for he knoweth not what he say.”

He added, “Honestly, he doesn’t. And I’m convinced that he likes me more than he likes Kamala.”

The controversy grew further when reports surfaced that the White House had altered the official transcript of Biden’s comments.

According to an Associated Press report, the White House press office changed the word “supporters” to “supporter’s,” suggesting Biden had only been referring to Hinchcliffe rather than all Trump voters.

The adjustment was made before the head of the White House stenographer’s office could verify its accuracy.

The stenographer’s office head sent an internal email stating, “If there is a difference in interpretation, the Press Office may choose to withhold the transcript but cannot edit it independently.”

The alteration sparked further criticism from conservatives, who viewed it as an attempt to walk back Biden’s controversial statement.

The costumes, Biden’s remarks, and the ensuing edits to the transcript have kept this controversy in the public eye as both sides continue to address voter perceptions heading into the 2024 election.
